LSAW Steel Pipes for Oil & Gas & Infrastructure Projects

LSAW Steel Pipes for Oil & Gas & Infrastructure Projects

DESCRIPTION

Why Buyers Keep Specifying LSAW for Large-Diameter Lines

When a pipeline engineer needs a large diameter, a heavy wall, and tight roundness tolerance, longitudinal submerged arc welded (LSAW) pipe is usually the first choice on the datasheet. A single straight seam, welded inside and out on a plate formed by the JCOE or UOE process, gives you consistent geometry and a weld that behaves predictably under hydrotest. Over the last two years, we have seen steady inquiries from gas transmission, crude gathering, water conveyance, and offshore tie-in projects, and the questions are now more specific than they were. Buyers no longer ask only for a price per tonne. They ask about the plate source, toughness, coating line capacity, and how fast documents can be released. This page is written around those questions.

What We Manufacture: Size, Grade, and Standard Coverage

PETROL STEEL CO., LTD. supplies LSAW pipe with outside diameters from 457 mm to 4,000 mm, wall thicknesses from 8 mm to 50 mm, and single lengths up to 18 m. The main product standards are API 5L PSL1 and PSL2 and ISO 3183, with grades from B through X80. For structural and general-purpose lines, we also supply EN 10219 S355J2H. We can quote pressure-vessel-quality plate pipe to ASTM A671 and A672 on request. Ends can be plain, beveled at 30° with a 1.6 mm root face, or cut square, and we can add flanged ends or grooved ends when the spool design calls for it. If your specification mixes standards, tell us at the inquiry stage; it is far cheaper to resolve a conflict between clauses before the plate is ordered than after.

LSAW, SSAW, or Seamless: A Practical Way to Choose

This is the question we are asked most often, and the honest answer depends on pressure, wall thickness, and schedule. Seamless pipe is hard to beat for small diameters and high-pressure service, but above roughly 24 inches, it becomes expensive and lead times stretch. Spiral (SSAW) pipe is economical for water mains and low-pressure lines, and we supply it too; see our SSAW spiral welded pipe for water and utility lines for that range. LSAW sits in the middle and is the usual answer for oil and gas transmission, thick-wall offshore sections, and any project where the design factor and toughness requirements rule out a spiral seam. If a line needs a very large diameter with a heavy wall and the specification allows hot expanded seamless as an alternative, our hot expanded seamless steel pipes for oil and gas transmission are worth pricing side by side.

Quality Control That Survives a Third-Party Audit

Most of the rejections we hear about from other mills come from a handful of causes: plate that does not match the heat chemistry on the certificate, seam weld toughness that fails at the test temperature, and dimensional drift after expansion. We control these by inspecting the plate on receipt, running ultrasonic testing on the full weld length and plate ends, and radiographic testing on the weld ends and any repair areas. We hydrostatically test each pipe and carry out mechanical tests, including Charpy impact and DWTT where the specification calls for them, per heat and per lot. For sour or offshore service, we can agree on PSL2 with supplementary requirements at the quotation stage. Our full inspection flow is described on the Quality Assurance page, and we welcome inspection by the agency named in your purchase order, including witnessed testing and pre-shipment checks.

Coating and Corrosion Protection Decided Early, Not Late

A pipe that arrives on time but with the wrong coating specification costs more than a late one. We can supply bare pipe with varnish or black lacquer, FBE, 3LPE, 3LPP, bitumen, epoxy, and internal cement mortar lining for water service. For buried gas and oil lines, 3LPE remains the most requested system. For a pipe that will see field girth welding, we leave cutbacks to the length you specify. If the service is aggressive enough that carbon steel will not last, our CRA-clad pipes for sour service and offshore offer a metallurgically bonded corrosion-resistant layer instead of a coating alone. Tell us the operating temperature, soil or seawater conditions, and design life, and we will recommend a system rather than simply quoting what was asked for.

Applications: Where Our LSAW Pipe Is Being Specified

The largest share of our LSAW inquiries comes from onshore gas and crude transmission, followed by water and wastewater conveyance, industrial plant piping, and structural tubulars for offshore platforms and jetties. For platform and jacket work, wall thickness and toughness requirements are different from those in a buried line, and we cover that separately under offshore platform and jacket structural steel tubulars. Projects that need a combined supply of pipe, bends, and fabricated spools can also draw on our large diameter, heavy wall and infrastructure steel pipes range and our hot induction pipe bends, which keeps the material source, the testing documents, and the delivery schedule under one supplier.

LSAW Line Pipe vs. LSAW Piling Pipe: Two Different Specifications

Many buyers use the same words for two very different products. The line pipe is pressure-containing, tested to API 5L or ISO 3183, and judged on weld toughness and hydrotest performance. A piling pipe is a structural member, usually supplied to ASTM A252 or EN 10219, and judged on yield strength, wall thickness, and driveability, and it is normally filled with concrete rather than carrying fluid. We manufacture both, but we quote and inspect them differently. If your project is a foundation, jetty, bridge pier, or marine pile, please read our dedicated page on SAWL piling pipe to ASTM A252 Gr.2 and EN 10219, where driving shoes, pile lengths, and A252 grade selection are covered in detail. For pipelines and process lines, stay on this page and send us the API 5L details.

Documents, Delivery, and Packing for Export Orders

Export buyers tell us that paperwork is where schedules slip. Each shipment includes mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1, and 3.2 is available when your inspector or classification society requires it. We also prepare packing lists, certificates of origin, and inspection reports in the format your PO calls for. We bundle or load pipes individually depending on diameter, with end protectors, coating protection, and dunnage designed for sea transport on breakbulk or in containers where the diameter allows. Lead time depends on plate availability and coating schedule, so we provide a firm date in the quotation rather than a range, and we update you upon plate arrival, after pipe expansion, and before shipment. We can arrange samples for qualification and welding procedure tests for approved vendor-list registration.

How to Request an Accurate Quotation

For a quotation you can use in a tender, we need five things: the standard and grade (for example, API 5L PSL2 X65), outside diameter and wall thickness, total quantity or length, coating and end preparation, and destination port. If you have a project specification or datasheet, send that as well, and we will mark any clause that affects price or lead time. Our engineers reply within 24 hours with ex-factory pricing and a proposed test plan. You can send your inquiry here, reach us at sales@petrolsteel.com, or message us on WhatsApp at +86 159 0035 7871. LSAW Steel Pipe: Questions Buyers Ask Before Placing an Order

What is the difference between LSAW and SSAW pipe for pipeline?
LSAW has one straight seam, welded inside and out on a formed plate, and is the usual choice for oil and gas transmission, heavy wall sections, and lines with strict toughness requirements. SSAW has a spiral seam and suits water mains and low-pressure lines, where cost matters more than seam performance. If your datasheet specifies a design factor or Charpy values at low temperature, LSAW is normally the safer route.

Should I order API 5L PSL1 or PSL2?
PSL2 adds mandatory toughness testing, tighter limits on chemistry and tensile properties, and full traceability. Most gas transmission, offshore, and sour-service lines specify PSL2. PSL1 is common for water, low-pressure oil, and general industrial piping. Check your project specification first, and send it to us if a clause is unclear.

What size range can you supply in LSAW pipe?
We supply outside diameters from 457 mm to 1,626 mm, wall thicknesses from 8 mm to 50 mm, and single lengths up to 18 m. Sizes outside this range, or non-standard wall and length combinations, can be reviewed on request.

Which certificates come with each shipment?
Mill test certificates to EN 10204 3.1 are standard. We can arrange EN 10204 3.2 when your inspector or classification society requires it. Inspection by the agency named in your purchase order, including witnessed testing and pre-shipment checks, is welcome.

What information do you need to quote for LSAW pipe?
Send the standard and grade (for example, API 5L PSL2 X65), OD and wall thickness, quantity or total length, coating and end preparation, and destination port. A project specification or datasheet helps us flag any clause that affects price or lead time. We reply within 24 hours with ex-factory pricing.

Is your LSAW line pipe the same as your piling pipe?
The line pipe is pressure-containing and tested to API 5L or ISO 3183. A piling pipe is a structural member, usually supplied to ASTM A252 or EN 10219. For foundations, jetties, and marine piles, see our SAWL piling pipe page.

When Your Project Needs Line Pipe Instead of Piling Pipe

Not every large-diameter LSAW order is a foundation job. If the pipe will carry gas, crude oil, or water under pressure, the governing document is no longer ASTM A252 or EN 10219 but API 5L or ISO 3183, with weld toughness, hydrotest, and traceability requirements that a piling specification does not impose. We run both product lines through the same plate sourcing and inspection system, but we quote and test them differently. For pressure-containing service, see our page on LSAW steel pipes for oil and gas and infrastructure projects, which covers API 5L grades up to X80, coating systems and documentation for export pipelines. If you are unsure which category your project falls into, send us the drawing or datasheet, and we will tell you which specification applies before you request prices
