Why specify Inconel 625?

Inconel 625 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy known for strength and resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking. It is widely used in hydrocracking and refinery units, offshore topsides, seawater systems, and chemical plants, where carbon steel and stainless steel struggle.

Solid Alloy 625 or clad/weld overlay: how to choose

Specify solid Alloy 625 fittings when the project calls for UNS N06625 throughout. When only the wetted surface needs a corrosion-resistant alloy and weight or cost matters, clad or weld overlay is the alternative route. Our range covers both, so you can compare them on one MTO.

Component Solid Alloy 625 (this page) Clad/overlay alternative
Pipe Seamless B444 pipe, mainly small bore and critical lines CRA clad pipes for sour service & offshore; weld overlay pipes (clad ID)
Compact lined pipe Not applicable Explosion welded clad pipes (EXW)
Bends B16.9 elbows, 1.5D CRA clad pipe bends & induction bends
Tees, reducers, caps B366 WPNCMC butt weld fittings CRA clad pipe fittings (tees, reducers, caps)
Flanges and blinds Forged solid alloy CRA clad flanges & spectacle blinds
Plate for vessels and linings Solid alloy plate Explosion bonded clad plates

Inconel 625 fittings supplied in annealed condition

Most EPC specifications state that all Inconel 625 (UNS N06625) material shall be supplied in annealed condition. We treat this specification as a mandatory requirement and control it as follows:

  • Heat treatment after forming: fittings are annealed after hot or cold forming to restore corrosion resistance and remove forming stress.
  • Documented on the MTC: heat treatment temperature, time, and cooling method are shown against each heat number.
  • Grade stated clearly: B444 / B443 Grade 1 is annealed; Grade 2 is solution annealed for higher-temperature service. Please state which grade your specification requires.
  • Testing on request: hardness check, grain size, and intergranular corrosion test (ASTM G28) where the project asks for it.

Quality control and inspection

  1. Raw material verification by heat number and mill certificate
  2. Positive material identification (PMI) of each fitting
  3. Dimensional and visual inspection to ASME B16.9 and MSS SP-97
  4. NDT: radiography of welds on welded fittings, dye penetrant on forged outlets
  5. Heat number marking on every piece, matching the MTC
  6. Third-party inspection by SGS, BV, TUV, or DNV can be arranged.

Packing is in plywood cases with end protectors, suitable for sea freight.

Applications

  • Hydrocracking and hydroprocessing units
  • Refinery process and flare piping
  • Offshore platform topsides and seawater systems
  • Sour service lines (NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 where required)
  • Chemical and petrochemical plants
  • Heat exchanger connections and overlay-welded spools

  • MTO-based quotations, with clear alternatives where a size is not standard
  • Documentation and inspection planned around EPC approval requirements
  • Fast response on email and WhatsApp during project bidding

Frequently asked questions

  1. What does ASTM B366 WPNCMC-S mean? ASTM B366 covers factory-made wrought nickel and nickel-alloy fittings. WPNCMC is the designation for alloy 625 (UNS N06625), and the suffix S means seamless (W means welded).
  2. What does “annealed condition” mean for Inconel 625 fittings? The fitting is heat-treated after forming to soften the material and relieve stress, which helps maintain corrosion resistance. Grade 1 is annealed, and Grade 2 is solution annealed, so state the grade in your RFQ.
  3. Should I choose seamless or welded Inconel 625 fittings? Follow the MTO suffix. Seamless (-S) is usual for high-pressure, sour, or critical service. Welded (-W) fittings are acceptable only where the specification allows, with radiography of the weld.
  4. Which dimensions and schedules do you supply? ASME B16.9 butt weld fittings in Sch 80, Sch 160, STD, XS, or special wall, with long radius 1.5D elbows. Branch outlets follow MSS SP-97.
  5. Which certificates come with the fittings? An EN 10204 3.1 mill test certificate with chemical and mechanical results and heat treatment records. 3.2 Certification, PMI reports, and ASTM G28 test reports are available on request.
  6. Is Inconel 625 suitable for sour and seawater service? Yes, it is widely used in both. For sour service, confirm the required hardness limit and NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156 compliance in your RFQ so we can document it.
  7. Can Inconel 625 fittings be welded to carbon steel or clad pipe? Yes, with a qualified welding procedure and a matching filler such as ERNiCrMo-3. If the line is clad or overlay-welded, tell us the pipe type, and see our CRA Clad & Weld Overlay Piping range so we can match the transition detail.

Additional questions from EPC buyers

  1. How do you maintain material traceability? Each fitting is marked with its heat number, size, schedule, and standard, and this matches the MTC. Documentation is compiled per purchase order line.
  2. Can you quote directly from our MTO? Yes. Send the MTO in Excel with item type, size, schedule, material, and quantity. We confirm the exact standard, flag non-standard items, and return a quotation within 24 hours.
  3. Do you support vendor approval and inspection planning? We provide the quality documents your approval process needs, including a quality plan and an inspection and test plan for review, and arrange third-party inspection or customer witness on request.
  4. What affects price and validity? Nickel prices move with the market, so quotations are valid for a short period. Quantity, forged versus formed items, schedule, and test requirements also affect the price.
